Officials at the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit announced that the largest multi-discipline, shoulder to shoulder, collegiate shooting sports championship event in the United States will grow even larger in 2013.
At the inaugural Army Strong Collegiate Shooting Championships last week here on Fort Benning, competitors in the National Rifle Association Intercollegiate Pistol Championships, NRA Intercollegiate Rifle Club Championships, Scholastic Steel Challenge Collegiate Championship, and Scholastic Clay Target Program Challenge earned their titles at the "Home of Champions." With four distinct collegiate and junior shooting championship match programs proving to be a successful formula, the program will be replicated next year with the addition of a another venue.
The Association of Colleges Union International will hold its international qualifier for Shotgun as part of the 2013 Army Strong Collegiate Shooting Championships, bringing potentially hundreds of additional collegiate athletes to the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit in mid-March of next year.
"I envision the USAMU becoming to collegiate shooting sports what Omaha is to collegiate baseball," said Lt. Col. Daniel Hodne, USAMU Commander. "The USAMU intends for the road to Fort Benning and the 'Home of Champions' to be the goal for collegiate and junior shooters from across our country every March."
The Army Strong Collegiate Shooting Championships will start March 9 with the ACUI International Qualifier and run through March 17 with the same match programs as its inaugural year - NRA Intercollegiate Pistol and Rifle Club, Scholastic Steel Challenge, and Scholastic Clay Target Program Challenge.
Another Army Strong Experience, to be held in conjunction with the USAMU's unique shooting championship venue, is also being planned for next year.
